Working for You in Salem & at Home
Oregon’s 83rd Legislative Assembly is wrapping up after a session focused largely on budgets, taxes, and transportation funding. Throughout the session, electric cooperative representatives were at the Capitol, advocating for policies that protect the reliable and affordable power you depend on.
During the short session, lawmakers considered a proposal directing the Oregon Department of Energy to study the state’s long-standing ban on nuclear power generation. With electricity demand in the Pacific Northwest expected to grow faster than new resources are being built, Oregon’s electric cooperatives support this study to ensure future decisions are grounded in sound science and data.
Additional legislation addressed residential solar technology. We support policies that expand access to new options while ensuring systems remain safe, effective, and communicated transparently to members.
With wildfire season approaching after a dry winter, we also urged lawmakers to consider the financial risks utilities face when wildfires occur. While no legislation was passed this session, the Oregon Public Utility Commission recently announced a comprehensive study to balance wildfire mitigation, affordability, and fair compensation for those affected. We appreciate the service of Oregon’s legislators and look forward to continued discussions that keep electricity reliable and affordable for the members and communities we serve.
At the same time, electrical safety remains a priority. Recent pop culture moments may make power equipment look harmless, but power poles and electrical facilities are not props—and they can be extremely dangerous. This month, we are visiting local schools to share important electrical safety lessons with students, helping the next generation understand how to stay safe around electricity.
Finally, as we prepare for Cherry Festival, please note our office will be closed to in-person visits from April 20 through April 28. Due to street closures and festival setup around our building, the payment drop box will also be inaccessible during this time. Our member services team will continue to be available by phone to assist with payments, account questions, and other needs. We appreciate your understanding and encourage you to plan ahead.
