Manager’s Message – February 2025

Communicating a Rate Increase for 2025

At Wasco Electric Cooperative (WEC), our mission to you, our members, is to provide cost-effective energy while maintaining safety, service, and reliability. This mission drives every decision we make, especially when it comes to rate adjustments. We understand the effects rate changes can have on our members, which is why we are committed to transparency and proactive communication.

As we progress into 2025, it is necessary to implement a rate increase for most rate classes. This adjustment is directly tied to a 6.47% increase in power supply costs that the cooperative will face later this year from the Bonneville Power Administration. While no one welcomes higher costs, this adjustment ensures we can continue to deliver the reliable service you expect.

Why is the increase necessary?

The cost of power supply is WEC’s largest single expense, and it is largely beyond our control. We have worked diligently to manage operational costs, improve efficiencies, and delay the need for this adjustment as long as possible. However, the 6.47% increase requires a corresponding adjustment to our rates to maintain the financial health of the cooperative and to continue providing safe and reliable service.

How will this affect members?

This rate increase applies to most member rate classes, with the exact effect varying depending on the member’s rate class and electricity use. For example, a residential member using an average of 1,475 kilowatt-hours a month might see an increase of approximately $9.73 a month. We understand that even modest increases can be challenging, and we are here to help.

Looking Ahead

Our commitment to our members remains steadfast. This rate adjustment is part of a broader strategy to ensure the cooperative’s stability while continuing to invest in infrastructure, safety, and innovative solutions for the future. As we navigate these challenges, we remain focused on serving the best interests of our members.

This rate increase is effective May 1, 2025. As the year progresses, we will continue to share vital information about the details of the rate increase. Thank you for your understanding as we work together to ensure you have a sustainable cooperative for years to come.
