New Meters Enhance Reliability, Efficiency

Wasco Electric Cooperative (WEC) is excited to announce a significant investment in automated meters aimed at enhancing the reliability and efficiency of our electric distribution system. This upgrade will allow us to better serve our members by streamlining operations, improving outage response, and delivering more accurate billing information.

Installation Timeline & Process

The rollout of these advanced meters begins at the Endersby Substation, with installations scheduled across our service area through the end of 2027. Members will receive notification letters as the installation dates for their substations approach.

The installation process is designed to minimize inconvenience, with a brief power interruption of only a few minutes expected on the day of installation. Members will see 2-meter readings on the following bill— 1 from the old meter and 1 from the newly installed automated meter.

Enhanced Capabilities & Benefits

The new Aclara automated meters offer a range of features that allow WEC to improve service. These meters enable remote capabilities for meter reading and service reconnections, reducing the need for on-site visits. In the event of an outage, these meters can pinpoint the location, allowing WEC to respond swiftly to restore power.

Members can expect several key benefits from these upgrades:

  • Reduced costs for meter readings. Remote meter reading lowers operational costs, creating savings for the cooperative.
  • Detailed use insights. Members can access detailed information about their power consumption, helping them manage their energy use.

These enhanced data capabilities can help WEC members understand their energy use more effectively. For example, smart meter data can help diagnose unusually high bills, enabling members to make informed adjustments and find solutions to reduce energy costs.

Cost Considerations

WEC understands some members may be concerned about the impact of new meters on their bills. In cases where older meters were reading inaccurately, the updated meters may result in a higher bill that reflects true consumption.

The meters being installed during changing weather can lead to suspicions that the new meters—rather than temperature changes—cause higher bills. We encourage members to contact our customer service team if they have questions about their bills.

Efficiency Savings for all Members

WEC’s investment in smart meters is part of the co-op’s commitment to keeping costs down while improving service. By implementing remote meter readings, WEC can lower operational expenses. These savings ultimately benefit all members.

Remote reconnections and precise outage management further support this goal, allowing WEC to maintain a high standard of service with greater efficiency.

We’re pleased to bring this new technology to our members as part of our ongoing commitment to innovation, reliability, and cost savings.
