Strong Governance Begins With Engaged Members
One of the greatest strengths of the cooperative business model is that our members elect the individuals responsible for providing strategic direction and oversight for the cooperative. Unlike investor-owned utilities, Wasco Electric Cooperative is governed by a board of directors made up of local members who live and work in the communities we serve.
As we prepare for this year’s director elections, I want to provide an overview of the nomination process and encourage interested members to consider serving in this important leadership role.
The board of directors plays a critical role in WEC’s success. Directors establish policies, approve budgets, oversee the financial health of the cooperative, and help position the organization to meet future challenges and opportunities. While the board does not manage day-to-day operations, it is responsible for setting the long-term vision and ensuring the cooperative remains focused on its mission of providing safe, reliable and affordable electric service.
In accordance with our bylaws, the board will appoint a nominating committee during this month’s meeting. The committee is responsible for identifying and nominating qualified candidates for the director positions up for election.
To serve as a director, an individual must meet the qualifications established in the cooperative’s bylaws, including being a member in good standing, residing within the cooperative’s service territory, and meeting certain independence and eligibility requirements designed to protect the integrity of the board.
The anticipated election timeline is as follows:
- August 27—Nominating committee appointed
- Early September—Committee meets and nominates candidates
- October 1—Nominations finalized and posted
- November 6—Ballots mailed to members
- November 6—Petition nomination deadline
- November 21—Election results announced at annual meeting
Serving as a director requires dedication, thoughtful decision-making, and a commitment to representing the interests of the membership. It is an opportunity to help shape the future of the cooperative and ensure Wasco Electric remains a strong and reliable resource for the communities we serve.
