Report Tree Interference

If you notice a tree or large branch growing into or near an overhead power line, please let us know. Your report helps us identify potential hazards and inspect areas that may require vegetation management to maintain safe, reliable electric service. Once your request is received, our vegetation management team will evaluate the location and determine whether trimming or other action is needed based on safety, reliability, and industry clearance standards.

Safety Reminder: If a tree has fallen onto a power line, a power line is down, or there is an immediate danger to people or property, stay away and call Wasco Electric Cooperative immediately at 541-296-2740. Always assume downed power lines are energized.

Do not attempt to trim or fell trees yourself that are growing near power lines. Doing so can put you at risk of deadly electrical shock.

Wasco Electric Cooperative works very hard to keep the power line right-of-way cleared of vegetation that can cause outages. TREES, LLC, our current vegetation management contractor, is trimming and felling trees near power lines, which is a continual effort to keep your electric service as reliable as possible.

Tree Planting Guide: Planting Safely Near Power Lines

Planting trees near power lines requires careful planning to ensure safety and prevent future service disruptions. Did you know that electric utilities are required to trim trees and other vegetation that grow too close to overhead power lines? Follow this tree planting guide to determine the safest distance for planting different types of trees near overhead power lines. Here’s how you can help us achieve that goal:

1. Plant Trees in the Right Place

• No Tree Zone (0′ to 20′): Avoid planting any trees within 20 feet of power lines. Trees in this zone can grow into power lines, creating hazards and increasing the risk of outages.
• Small Tree Zone (30′ to 40′): For trees that remain under 25 feet tall, plant them at least 25 feet away from power lines. These smaller trees are less likely to interfere with electrical infrastructure.
• Medium Tree Zone (50′ to 60′): Trees that grow between 25 and 40 feet in height should be planted at least 40 feet away from power lines. This ensures they have enough space to grow safely.
• Large Tree Zone (70′ and beyond): For trees exceeding 40 feet in height, plant them at least 60 feet away from power lines. This keeps power lines clear and prevents unnecessary pruning or removal.

2. Don’t Block Pad-Mounted Transformers

• When planting around pad-mounted transformers or junction boxes, all vegetation shall be planted at least 3 feet away from all sides and 10 feet away from the access panel.

3. Report Dangerous Branches

• If you spot a tree or branch that is dangerously close to power lines, please let us know immediately. Your prompt reporting helps us prevent potential hazards and outages.
